A little recap from last week’s blog
My family and I visited The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC on October 10th 2009. The last time we visited the Museum was about 7yrs ago when my son was 7 and he was a Cub scout so we decided it was time to check it out again despite the rain and clouds the people game out by the hundreds to check it out that weekends events which happened to be Disney’s Christmas Carol Train Tour it was great to see that the rain did not ruin the event nor the fun everyone was having.
For this week’s photo blog post I wanted to show you to the museum’s roundhouse turntable.

First A Little history ….
The North Carolina Transportation Museum is located on the site of what was once Southern Railway Company’s largest steam locomotive repair facility. Begun in 1896 at a point halfway between Washington and Atlanta, Spencer Shops and the town of Spencer, N.C. were both named for Samuel Spencer, the first President of Southern Railway. The site contains an authentic train depot, antique automobiles, and a 37- stall roundhouse that includes 25 locomotives and other exhibit areas.
The 37-bay Bob Julian Roundhouse, one of the largest ever constructed, was built in 1924 and is one of the few preserved roundhouses remaining in the country. The building houses about 40 restored locomotives and rail cars.
The turntable was used to turn locomotives at the Roundhouse and still operates for visitors and trains. A five-minute ride on the turntable at the Roundhouse is available on the half-hour for $1.

This one I just had to add because I thought it was cute the hubby could not resist to show us his roundhouse kick next to the roundhouse sign…I know we’re cheesy but you got to love it.

Stay tune for next week’s look around the inside of the museum.
